Research In Motion Hits Lowest Price Since '04; Below Book
Research In Motion shares this morning hit a new 52-week low – and in fact now trade at their lowest level since 2004. Bloomberg points out that the stock is now trading below book value for the first time in nine years.
The BlackBerry maker remains in serious trouble: it continues to lose market share to both Apple and Android phones, and Nokia is just coming to market with its first phones running the latest version of Windows Phone. The market research firm Canalys noted yesterday that Research In Motion’s share of the U.S. handset market in the third quarter fell to 9% from 24% a year ago. The research firm said that the company’s outlook in the U.S. market is “bleak.”
“RIM needs to deliver new, fresh, exciting products to the market and increase its pace of innovation and execution if it is going to have any chance of reasserting its position in North America,” Canalys analyst Tim Shepherd said in a statement. “It badly needs to deliver on its potential with its new BBX platform.”
