HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- The Huntsville Housing Authority is eyeing an extensive redevelopment of two aging public housing sites and selling another as part of ongoing efforts to deconcentrate poverty in the city.
After a five-hour meeting with its consultants Thursday, the authority's volunteer board of commissioners agreed to seek a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development planning grant for a potential makeover of Sparkman Homes on Holmes Avenue in center city.
The authority also intends to apply for tax credits through the Alabama Housing Finance Authority to rehabilitate some of the 194 units at Lincoln Park on Washington Street in north Huntsville.
Executive Director Michael Lundy said both sites would likely end up with a mix of public housing tenants and affordable housing aimed at families earning up to 60 percent of the area's median income.
Board members also gave Lundy permission to solicit proposals from individuals or businesses interested in purchasing Searcy Homes, which occupies 19.4 acres of prime real estate across from the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce.
